2006 Race For the Cure
On April 22nd, 2006, the 15th annual Indianapolis Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was held. A friend of ours, Jan Schroeder, is a breast cancer survivor and was participating in the event, so Rick and I headed downtown early in the morning to take photos. The Indianapolis Affiliate is one of 115 in the nation and one of three in Indiana. This year, the Indy event had over 35, 000 people registered to participate, including over 7800 men. Often thought of as a only a women's disease, breast cancer can and does afflict men also. About 2000 survivors were expected for this years Race.
Organized in 1982, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded due to a promise between two sisters, Susan Goodman Komen and Nancy Goodman Brinker. Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, when little was known about this disease. She asked her sister to help find an end to this disease. Today, thanks to Nancy and the efforts of thousands of men and women, more is known about diagnosis and treatment options of breast cancer.
I have two galleries, one for Jan and the other is a few of the pictures I took as we wandered around. Clicking on the links will open a new window, click on a thumbnail to see a larger version of the photo.
Jan lost her battle in October of 2006. She will be missed by all who knew her.
